Just a quick comment about your issue with your Mac...depending on your location, many hardware repairs can indeed be done at the Apple store. I was originally told that repairs could not be done at the store, but later found out that they can. You can also have it sent off for repairs from the Apple store instead of dealing with phone support and having them ship a box out to you, etc.

Also, pretty much most computer and software manufacturers provide some sort of education discount for faculty, staff, and students in K-12 and Higher Education.

Because I am in Higher Ed, I always check the vendors website and/or speak with the campus rep for any discounts that are available. You'd be surprised what is out there, but no one ask.
